I have a couple of moles, is that a problem?

Most people have moles, warts, pigmented spots and other lesions on their head, face and neck. Most of these growths never amount to any sort of health problem, but some lesions may be pre-malignant (pre-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Moles that change shape, texture, color or size should be examined and possibly removed for biopsy. Many patients have benign moles and lesions that they wish removed for cosmetic reasons.

What’s the best way to get rid of  them?

moles before and after
Before          After

Most benign moles can be easily removed with little or no scarring. At Gentle Care Chiropractic, we recommend biopsy of any lesion that is suspicious. Our office uses the newest technology in radiofrequency treatment for mole removal. Most benign moles and lesions can be removed without any incision or stitches. By eliminating incisions and sutures, the final scar is usually undetectable. Although no doctor can guarantee the lack of a scar, these methods, in our experience, leave a much less noticeable scar than other methods such as scalpel excision or liquid nitrogen. Freezing moles and lesions with liquid nitrogen can cause depressed white scars that are very unsightly. We utilize radiowave technology to melt the moles and lesions with minimal tissue damage to the underlying skin to avoid this type of problem.

Surgically excising (cutting with a scalpel and stitching) is also oftentimes used to treat benign moles, but in some cases can leave unsightly scars form the additional, more invasive trauma, which can leave a scar that looks as bad, or worse, than the mole.

Depressed white scars and poor excision scars do not have to be a part of mole removal. A minimal or unrecognizable scar is possible with the new technology of radiowave technology.

Radiowave Surgery? What is that, and what can I expect?

Radiowave surgery is a new technology that utilizes actual radiowaves (similar to marine band radios) to melt away or cut tissue. This unique technology is extremely gentle to the tissues and causes much less damage that standard electrosurgery or other cutting or freezing techniques.

Both, Dr. Ralph and Dr. Veronica, have been providing this service to their patients for nearly ten years. With this simple technology it takes only a few minutes to remove moles and other lesions without cutting or stitches. If the lesion is suspicious, a biopsy of the lesion will be done before its removal. For benign lesions, a small amount of local anesthesia is injected with an ultra-small needle under the mole. After removing the mole, a raw area the size of the mole is left. The raw area will heal in 5-6 days to smooth pink skin and fade to normal color over the coming weeks.

The surgical site is covered with an antibiotic ointment and will progress to smooth pink skin over the next 5-6 days. At this time the area can be covered with makeup if desired. The pink area will persist for several weeks (or longer in rare cases) and eventually fade to normal skin color. Patients are scheduled for follow up at 8 weeks and many times the patient or the surgeon cannot tell where the mole or lesion was. The healing from radiowave technology is exceptional.

Again, it is impossible for any surgeon to guarantee scar free surgery, but a scar free or minimal scar outcome is not unusual with radiowave technology. Patients with extremely deep lesions or those patients with pigmented skin are more at risk for minor scarring.

What is a skin tag? I think I have a couple of them, should I be worried about it?

A skin tag is not cancer so you can relax, everything will be ok. Skin Tags are just a soft, skin-colored growth that hangs from the skin by a thin piece of tissue called a "stalk". AKA: "Acrochordon." They are quite common; doctors remove more than a million each year.

Are They a Problem?

Skin tags can be a problem because the location of the tag may be irritated by the constant rubbing of clothing or jewelry or if the tag is on the eye or in the nose. Skin tags appear most often on the neck - inside tiny folds. Other common locations for skin tags are the armpits, beneath the breasts or in the genital region. They can also be located on places like the hands and face where they can be unsightly. When a skin tag first appears - it is as a tiny soft bump on the skin. Over time, it grows into a less than attractive skin tag. A skin tag is painless, although after a few hours in the wrong clothes they can be rubbed raw. Anyone can recognize a skin tag easily by looking at it. A skin tag's characteristic appearance is soft, easily moveable, flesh-colored or slightly darker and usually attached to the skin surface by a stalk, you don't need any expert to point one out. Skin tags are easy to move or wiggle back and forth, BUT, if you notice that a skin growth is too firm to be wiggled easily, is a different color than surrounding skin, is multicolored or has raw or bleeding areas, ask your doctor to examine it, or we can do that for you. If it is not obvious that your skin growth is a skin tag, we may want to do a biopsy, which means we will send a small sample to a laboratory to be examined, though this is extremely rare.

How Are They Removed?

They are treated in the same way as moles. This means you will have the best possible outcome with the use of radiosurgery.
